Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago In Illinois, she was the child of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Because of their fear of stress, the parents were not keen to let the actress pursue acting until she turned 18. Perry said that she was too shy to act during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry relocated in New York to search for television work landing small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California where she found theatre jobs. Perry was a part of Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she received the role through an audition.
